Raksit Leila Shooting

Omaya

It was a full-week rush!

It was exhausting as hell, but was so much fun that fatigue gets totally forgotten.

First, the people from the team (apart from Yasmine, Chadi & me):
Abdallah Hattoum worked wonders creating an even better set than what we had imagined, on a very short notice too;
Maher Safar did more than producing and was always present anytime anything was needed;
Nadim Saoma, our DOP, whom I suspect to be a wizard, used some magic to produce some fantastic images within harsh conditions, and managed to make us all laugh in the process.

But that is not everything: the people from Mashrou3 Leila were all extraordinary, easy-going, never uttering a negative word, no matter how much we tortured them. Not only that, but they even helped all along during the process, staying later then needed of them to brief the next band member in queue, giving helpful opinions, and so on.

All in all, thanks to everyone involved, it was a great shooting that felt more like fun than actual work.

AS3 in Linux

[edit 2: new updated article! Check it out here]

[edit: I am not sure this article is still relevant. Still interesting, but not exhaustive. There is a few new methods I did not know about (thanks tom) that I have to try...See the comments for more details]

Ok, I have been trying to code in AS3 in Ubuntu.
All I can say is Adobe is not making an easy life to the coder who doesn’t want to use Windows.
I have been on the lookout for a solution for quite some time now…Just to be clear from the start: I did not find a suitable answer. But keep on reading, there is half-baked solutions here.

Trying Corel Painter

I am trying my hand at Corel Painter. It revealed to be much harder than I thought. It is not as convenient and “clean” as Photoshop, and not as rough as real media. It borrows some of the problems of both worlds. I quite do not know yet how useful it can be, but I like it.
I did not have time yet to stay on a drawing for long.
This is what I have achieved so far:

trial 1

Five minutes after opening Painter for the first time, this is what I was able to come up with.

doodles with painter

doodles with painter

I know, don’t tell me, you did not feel any artistic orgasm while looking at it.

trial 2

After spending some time being puzzled by the gigantic amount of options and brushes that all look the same to me, I decided I needed to draw something, fast. So I did this:

random drawing

Still not the piece of art my ego requested.

trial 3

A bit frustrated, I went to Amandine to get a crash course, and after listening to her wise advice, and more importantly, watch her use Painter for some time, I was able to understand a bit better how the whole thingy works. Alternating seats, we both drew this:

a bit better

a bit better

It’s alright for a ten minute thing.

I’ll be posting my progress, but I never met such a steep learning curve in any software in my life.

Wouhouuuu! We are Chekchy!

Two yelostudio movies (“La Fille à Cent Sous” and “Zeid & Leila”) have been selected for the NO TABOO 2009, 4th International Festival of Animation and Sex Education in Rio de Janeiro! This is a festival that concentrates on animation in relation with sex & relationships! We don’t always make a fuss about it when we are selected, but we are specially proud to be screened there, at a festival that treats animation as a mature medium for a mature audience…And that has “sex” in its title!

From the website:
The Short Animation Competition Program is made up of Brazilian and foreign animations from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Korea, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, USA, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Lebanon (<– that’s us!!), Malaysia, United Kingdom, Sweden and Uruguay. The subjects covered by the animations are related to love, romance, safe sex, relationships, sexuality, gender, sexual diversity and eroticism, many animations treat the subject with good humor.

So if you have some money, I expect you to book a trip there right away so you can watch our movies in all their sexy glory.
